Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a technical term for a natural state of mind. Hypnosis is a natural state of relaxation and focused concentration. Brain scans show that the brain enters into a specific state under hypnosis, similar to the time just before you fall asleep when one enters the alpha state.
This is a very pleasant state of mind, people simply feel very relaxed. It is a normal state of mind, therefore many people do not even feel they are in hypnosis, but simply very relaxed. During hypnosis, the mind is very open to imagery and the subconscious emerges more freely and is more receptive to suggestions to create change.
There is an enhancement of emotional learning and increased insight. The hypnotic state is frequently experienced during times of daydreaming, prayer or meditation, or “highway hypnosis” when we’ve been staring at the road for prolonged periods of time.
Can I be Hypnotized?
Some are more easily hypnotized than others. Everyone can be hypnotized. You have to pass through a state of hypnosis to get to sleep, and you pass through it again on your way back to full consciousness when you wake up. If you can fall asleep, you can be hypnotized.
Do I have to believe in hypnosis in order for this to work?
Belief in hypnosis is not required for hypnosis to be effective. Hypnosis is a science.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis feels different to everyone. Some people report a floating or tingling sensation, others feel weighted down like a heavy and comfortable blanket has been placed over them. Others don't experience very many physical sensations yet have a sense of extreme mental clarity.
How will I know I am hypnotized?
The positive change in your behavior after the sessions is the most important aspect of your hypnotherapy session.
Can a person in hypnosis be controlled?
No. It only appears that way in stage hypnosis. Professional hypnosis is quite different. If the hypnotist were to give you suggestions that you didn’t agree with or were morally against your beliefs, you would either reject them.
Can a hypnotist make me do something I don’t want to do?
You are allowing the hypnotist to guide you into your deeper and broader memory and other resources.
Can I get "stuck" in the hypnotic state?
You can’t get stuck. Since hypnotic levels are altered states between being fully awake and being completely asleep, you would merely fall asleep and wake up when you are ready.
Will I reveal any secrets when hypnotized?
No. You will not reveal any intimate secrets you would not tell while awake. Since you are in charge, and letting yourself be hypnotized, your own mind determines how much or how little you wish to contribute to a hypnosis session.
What can hypnosis help me with?
Some common uses of hypnosis are to stop smoking, live a healthier lifestyle, increase sports performance, reduce stress and anxiety, eliminate phobias, control pain, stop teeth grinding, and change bad habits as well as creating new beneficial ones.
How many sessions will it take to see the change I desire?
That really depends on the person and their personal situation. Some people can experience all the change they want in one or two sessions. Other people might require seven or eight sessions.
